There was a turn out of 8 or 9 guns for the final day. Frank was back from holiday supported by his grandson and Ross had also come with Sandy to boost the beating line. Frank’s dog was showing no sign of its argument with a car earlier in the season. The weather was far better than forecast, though it did briefly rain in the afternoon. However, for much of the day, we enjoyed the sunlight views of Craig Lea to the north. There was a reasonable breeze.

The first: Encircling the bottom of the arm and weedy field pond- with walking guns coming in from the east. Second: Walking guns with the beaters from Weedy Field to Franks and main pond.Third: The Roundels- We thought that we had covered the gaps from last days behaviour, but most of the birds chose a different route from where to break out where there were no guns! Four: The Boulders. This was disappointing compared to the last day and no birds were shot as none broke over the guns. (En route to the Boulders, the upper arm was swept.)

Lunch at the Glamping Hut. Five: The Weedy field to Roadside with walking guns assisting the beaters. Six: Keilor Road and Sandy’s.Finish circa 3 pm.

Considering that there were considerably fewer birds evident on the estate it was felt that the bag was as good as could have been hoped for. The weather was good as was the company. Across the water, north of the Almond we could hear that the beaters day was going with a bang.

Next date for the diary will be the AGM which has yet to be arranged.
